Petrol pump strike across Kerala on New Year 2024

News

Fuel station operators affiliated with the All Kerala Federation of Petroleum Traders (AKFPT) plan to strike from 20:00 Dec. 31 to 06:00 Jan. 1 to protest increasing violence against petrol pump employees. Operators claim the work stoppage is also a precaution against attacks during New Year celebrations, which they claim is a common issue in recent years.

There are approximately 2,000 petrol stations across the state. Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) officials stated that 14 of their fuel stations in Kerala will remain open during the strike.

Associated fuel shortages are possible and may affect business operations, public and private transport services, and ground shipping. Strike-related demonstrations may occur; potential protest sites include fuel depots and stations, government buildings, public squares, and thoroughfares. Such gatherings will probably draw dozens of participants in major urban centers. Localized transport disruptions are probable if demonstrators march along or block roadways. Increased traffic congestion will also likely occur near fuel stations that are operational.
